Overview – Knee Ankle Foot Orthosis
The term KAFO is an acronym that stands for Knee and Ankle Foot Orthosis and describes the part of the body that this device encompasses. This device extends from the thigh to the foot and is generally used to control instabilities in the lower limb by maintaining alignment and controlling motion. MOP’s highly trained clinicians work very closely with you the patient to ensure comfort and fit. Several different diseases can cause the need for a KAFO including (but not limited to) Polio, MS, Paraplegia, Quadraplegia, Cerebral Palsy, Spina Bifida and Arthritis are common examples. Specializing in KAFO bracing for:
- Knee pain from loss of joint integrity
- Crouch gait
- Genuvalgum – (knock knee) often caused by arthritic knee destruction
- Genuvarum – (bowleg)
- hyperextension – (recurvatum) knee bends backwards
- buckling knee

||Metal Knee Ankle Foot Orthosis (KAFO)
This KAFO with metal double uprights provides stability for the knee and ankle. Metal is preferred for increased strength or to accommodate edema.
|Plastic Knee Ankle Foot Orthosis (KAFO)
This plastic KAFO is more lightweight and allows you to wear a variety of shoes with the brace.
Double Upright Laminated Knee Ankle Foot Orthosis (KAFO)
Laminated materials provide additional strength and rigidity for additional control.
Laminated Unilateral Knee Ankle Foot Orthosis (KAFO)
Rigid laminate allows for single upright only. Eliminated medial contact of uprights during gait.
Stance Control Knee Ankle Foot Orthosis (KAFO)
It is a lightweight KAFO that stabilizes the knee during the stance phase of gait but enables knee flexion during swing phase. At the end of swing phase, as the knee reaches full extension, a ratchet engages to stabilize the knee.
Unilateral Unloader Knee Ankle Foot Orthosis (KAFO)
The Unilateral Unloader KAFO is custom molded, lightweight, and easy to use. Tempered, high carbon steel makes the KAFO strong and durable. Also allows for rotational control, a free or locking hinge, and a
